Lady
Chapel

Although it is currently housing the statue of St. Anne, the small chapel to the left of the altar is the Lady Chapel.  It is clearly visible from outside the church as the structure with the domed roof.

Built in 1880 the Lady Chapel required skilled negotiation with the authorities who disliked the fact that its exterior protruded into the street further than the existing buildings.  A petition of residents from Wentworth Terrace was put in testifying that the addition would be a positive attribute rather than a detriment to the area, and permission was granted.

The structure has suffered some subsidence over the years, due in part to its entirely inadequate foundations, and considerable work was required during the 1990 restorations.
