Catholic Emancipation Act
Also called the Catholic Relief Bill. Passed in 1829, this Act
of Parliament removed some of the remaining restrictions against Catholics
which had been in place during penal times.
Catholic Registration Association
Wakefield branch formed 1904 to inform and encourage Catholic voters
to give their support to candidates who supported denominational education.
Catholic Women's League
Parish group currently operating in the parish. The Catholic
Women's League is a national organisation for Catholic women. The
Saint Austin's branch formed in 1910.
Catholic Young Men's Society (CYMS)
The first parish group to be formed in Saint Austin's in May 1858.
The CYMS flourished and provided many activities and events for the men
of the parish. The two wars badly affected membership with nearly
70 members killed in the First World War. The group still has members
in the parish.
Catte, Anne Le (Sister Eustache O.S.B.)
A member of the order of Benedictine nuns who lived at Heath Old Hall
and who is buried in Kirkthorpe churchyard.

Chantry Chapel
Ancient chapel on Wakefield bridge.
Chapels of Ease
Designated mass centres in outlying areas of the parish. Some
were purpose built while others were rented or borrowed for the purpose
of celebrating mass.
Children of Mary
Parish group for women operating in St Austin's during the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries. The group maintained a healthy rivalry
with the CYMS with whom they would compete when it came to raising funds
for parish causes. The group wore blue mantles on official occasions.
Choir
St Austin's choir has always had an excellent reputation for quality.
The current choir operates regularly at Sunday masses.
Clarkson, Henry
Author of Memories of Merrie Wakefield in which he gives an
account of an occasion when he and his cousin spied on the nuns at Old
Heath Hall.

Comerford, Fr.
First parish priest of English Martyrs, Lupset when the area became
independant of Saint Austin's in the 1930's.
Confraternity of Saint Joseph
Parish group for married women, active in St. Austins in the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries. The group was also called The Guild
Of St Joseph and its members wore purple sashes during official events.

Cooke, Fr. John
Curate between 1938 and 1940
Cooper, Fr. Richard (S.J.)
Jesuit superior running the parish between 1869 and 1876. From
1876 to 1879 Fr Cooper was still based at Saint Austin's and was in charge
of running the outstations (chapels of ease) in Ossett, Normanton and Whitwood.

Crofts, William
Mr Crofts and his wife Ellen Lynch, were the first to take advantage
of the church's registration for marriages in January 1839.
