Ceiling

The ceiling is one of the few surviving features providing a clue to the elabrate decoartion which once covered much of St. Austin's church.  Around the front of the church the ceiling is highly decorated with plaster reliefs of wheat and grapes.  These were once coloured - bt althugh nor painted to match the colour of the surrounding walls and ceiling, they are still an interesting sight.

Irelands original plans indicate that the church was once going to have an entirely curved ceiling.  In the end however, althought the roof was curved as shown here, the ceiling of the church tapered off to become flat.

Today a space exists between the celing and the actual roof which can be accessed from high above the sanctuary.

The space was used for access for maintenance work.
