The Crucifix

The large crucifix stands on the back wall of the sanctuary and is a strikingly visible feature even from the rear of the church.

The crucifix was purchased in 1957 during the redecorations when the decision was made to tone down the elaborate decoration of the sanctuary of earlier times.  The paintings were removed and the crucifix became a central feature on the back wall of the sanctuary over the high altar and the tabernacle.

Prior to the restoration of 1990, the crucifix stood in an arched frame.

This frame had formed the border of the paintings which had occupied the same space prior to 1957.

This border was removed during the restoration so that the crucifix now stands on a flat wall.
