 Fr. John Nunan
1998 - 2005

Fr. John was born in the small rural community of Lismire near Kanturk, County Cork, Ireland.  His parents Joe and Brigid were farmers and he studied in the local Primary School at Lismire before attending boarding school at St. Colman's College in Fermoy.

When he decided that he was being called to the priesthood, Fr. John attended St. Patrick's college in Carlow.  There he served on the student council and gained a reputation for speaking a lot of sense with conviction.

He is described by a fellow seminarian as being good at reaching out to people, particularly fellow students who were confused or lonely.  Heavily into drama, he would often be cast in the role of the "baddie".

Fr. John was ordained in June 1971 at St. Colman's Cathedral in his home Diocese of Cloyne.  He said his first mass in the parish of Lismire where he had grown up.

Since moving to England, Fr. John has served in several parishes of the Leeds Diocese:  St. Augustine's in Harehills, Holy Name on Otley Old Road, St. Nicholas' in Gipton, and St. Malachy's in Halifax.  He enjoyed a sabbatical before taking up his current post as Parish Priest of St. Austin's.

While in the parish  Fr. John oversaw work within the church to provide improved facilites both within the church and also within the parish rooms, restoring the latter to an admirable condition and appointing a committee to oversee their management .  Towards the end of 2001,  Fr. John oversaw major work to redecorate the church itself, provide additional heating, and re-arrange the sanctuary.

In June 2001 Fr. John celebrated his 30th Anniversary.  The event co-incided with a parish party, a new event which Fr. Nunan envisaged would help parishioners to celebrate their achievements and life and worship together.  The event was a great success and provided the opportunity for parishioners to surprise Fr. John with a presentation in honour of his own thirty years in the priesthood.

He left the parish to take up an appointment in Wetherby in September 2005
