An ABC of Saint Austin's

Hall, Parish
While the parish rooms had existed as long as the church building itself, the parish hall was a later addition.  It was the last construction work undertaken by the Jesuits in 1930 and intended to provide rooms for parish groups and an area for plays and theatre performances.

Hansom, Joseph Anthony & Son
Architect who produced the plans used for the church enlargement in 1878.  Joseph Anthony Hansom was also the designer of the Hansom Cab, though it is likely that it was his son who was responsible for the work at St Austin's.

Hardy, Fred
Church organist during the 1880's.

Harris, Fr Raymond (S.J.)
Jesuit chaplain to the Watertons of Walton Hall in 1772 and 1773.

Hartell, Fr. John (S.J.)
Jesuit superior in charge of St. Austin's between 1882 and 1885.

Harty, Fr. Michael
Parish priest of Saint Austin's between 1933 and 1943.

Harty, Miss Sarah
Teacher at St. Austin's school between 1902 and 1947.

Hassan, Fr. Patrick (S.J.)
Assistant priest in the parish during 1887 and again between 1893 and 1894.

Hawley, Fr. Peter
Curate between 1957 and 1964.

Haydn's Masses
Haydn's music for the mass was a favourite for St Austin's choir.  Mass Number 1 was sung on Schools Sunday 1871; Number 3 during the re-opening mass following extension and redecoration work in 1856; Number 16 on the Feast of the Assumption 1865; and the Imperial Mass following refurbishments in 1890.

Heaney, Fr. Thomas (S.J.)
Assistant priest in the parish between 1911-1913 and 1930-1931.

Heath Old Hall
Home to the community of Benedictine nuns in Wakefield during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Heeran, Fr. Edward
Popular young curate in the parish between 1937 and 1947.

Heywood, John Pemberton
One of two Justices of the Peace who signed the registration document recognising St Austin's as a "Papist Chapel" in 1928.  Heywood lived in the large house near the Girls High School which has a view directly down Wentworth Terrace from the other side of the road.

Hird, Fr. Bernard
Curate between 1981 and 1985

Holy Angels, Guild of the
Parish group for young girls which operated in St Austin's during the late Nineteenth Century.

Hudson, Fr. John
Curate between 1943 and 1953.

Hulley, Fr. Alfred (S.J.)
Assistant priest in the parish between 1893 and 1897 and also 1902 and 1903.

Hutton, Fr. Michael
Curate between 1988 and 1990.
