Ignatius, Saint
Founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit) which ran St Austin's for
the first 100 years of the parish's existence. The outstation at
Ossett was named after the saint and the patron was retained when the parish
became independant. A painting of the saint was also present for
a time among the decorations on the back wall of the sanctuary at St. Austin's.
Imelda, Mother
Sister of Charity of Saint Paul. Mother Imelda was present at
the opening of the school buildings in 1859.
Ireland, Joseph
Architect responsible for drawing up the original plans of St. Austin's.
Irish Immigrants
The Irish population of Wakefield grew considerably in the Nineteenth
century and is the considerable increase in the congregation of St Austin's
over this period is credited as being at least partly due to this group.
