The Narthex

The Narthex was created in 1990 by partitioning off the rear of the church and removing the benches which once filled that area.

Two new rooms were created opposite the entrance way. The church shop was formed to sell cards and religious items to parishioners.  Between it and the main body of the church a new confessional was created.  This replaced three other confessionals which were removed in the redecorations.  Two of these were at either side of the Lady Chapel while the third had taken up part of the presbytery building.

To the rear of the narthex is an entrance into the presbytery and stairs to the choir gallery.
To the front are doors into the main body of the church.

The exit from the narthex leads into the porch where there is a plaque commemorating the parish priests and Jesuit Superiors of St Austin's since it was built in 1828.

Other features of the narthex include:

Parish Shop & Library
War Plaque commemorating the parish war dead
