The Stations
of the Cross

The stations of the cross were first introduced to the church in 1856 and may be the work of an F.S. Barff who had undertaken many of the other decorative works in the church at that time.  They were certainly not unique, an identical set has been identified in use at St. Josephs, Moorends.

The stations are mounted on the walls to either side of the main body of the church.  They have been in use since installation with the exception of a thirty year period between around 1880 and 1910, during which time they were mysteriously removed and stored in the church porch.

The stations have been described as
plaster casts of some value and considerable artistic merit.

As well as being restored in 1910, they
were also given additional treatments
during the restoration of 1990.

At this time the flimsy crosses
above each of the stations were
replaced with solid wooden crosses.
