Home of the Catholic Waterton family for many centuries. 

Ward, Joseph
One of the first parishioners of St. Austin's and friend of Charles Waterton 

Warren, Fr. Wilfrid
Curate between 1950 and 1955. 

War Memorials
St. Austin's has several memorials to those killed in the World Wars.  A stone cenotaph outside the church on Wentworth Terrace commemorates those killed in WW1 while a plaque in the narthex lists those parishioners killed in both World Wars.  The original St. Peter & Paul's chapel of ease in Portobello was also orginally built as a memorial those members of the parish who were killed in the First World War. 

Waterton,Charles
Founder member of St. Austin's parish, Squire Waterton contributed both time and money to the establishment of the church building and the development of the Catholic community in Wakefield. 

Watteville, Fr Edward de (S.J.)
Assistant priest from 1862-1864.  Fr Watteville was present at the time of the riots and was among those who rushed to the old school to defend the convent from the approaching mob. 
 

Webb, Hannah
Housekeeper for the presbytery during the census of 1851. 

Wentworth Terrace
Site of St. Austin's church.  Wentworth was the family name of the Earls of Strafford who originally owned the land on which the church is built. 

Wheelan, Miss Jean
Teacher at English Martyrs school from the 1950's and later headmistress of St. Austin's Infant's school until the 1980's. 

White, Fr. Alfred (S.J.)
Assistant priest between 1865-1868 and 1882 - 1888.  Fr White was also  chaplain to the prison. 

Whitehead, Fr. J
Curate between 1934 and 1935. 

Whitsuntide Processions
Annual procession in which members of St. Austin's invariably took part.  The various parish groups and guilds all paraded in uniform. 

Whitwood
Area near Castleford which once fell within St. Austin's boundaries and was ministered by the Jesuits at Wakefield. 

Wilcock, Fr. George (S.J.)
Assistant priest in 1910. 

Williams, Miss Anne
Long-standing teacher, first at St. Austin's Senior School and later at St. Thomas A' Becket before retirement in the mid-late 1980s. 

Williams, Fr. Charles (S.J.)
Assistant Priest between 1891-1892. 

Wilson, Fr. Anthony
Curate between 1985 and 1987.
